TNT ORIGINAL MOVIES OCTOBER PREMIERE: DAYS OF THE BAGNOLD SUMMER
This October, TNT Original Movies brings an exciting twist to its original, never-before-seen slate of movies with the premiere of Days of the Bagnold Summer on Saturday, 03 October. The comedy, adapted from the graphic novel by Jof Winterhart, Days of The Bagnold Summer is a tender, funny coming-of-age story about single parenting and heavy metal. Sue (Monica Dolan) works in a library. Daniel (Earl Cave) eats crisps and listens to Metallica. This was the summer Daniel was due to spend with his dad and his dad’s new wife in Florida. But when they cancel his trip at the last minute, Sue and Daniel suddenly face the prospect of six long weeks together. An epic war of wills ensues in the unassuming battleground of their suburban home as they each reckon with private tragedies – and pursue their personal passions.

Paramount Network To Rebrand As The Paramount Movie Network, What Does That Mean For International Markets?

$

0

Paramount Network is set to rebrand to the Paramount Movie Network as it plots a focus on television movies.

The move is the latest change at ViacomCBS following the merger and comes after the company revealed that its upcoming streaming service is to be called Paramount+.

As part of the move, the network has cancelled a slew of non-scripted titles including Ink Master, Wife Swap and Battle of the Fittest Couples, while other titles including Bar Rescue and Lip Sync Battle will move to other ViacomCBS networks.

Chris McCarthy, President of Entertainment and Youth Brands at ViacomCBS, told Deadline’s sister title Variety, which broke the news,  that it is planning to air 52 original movies a year on the network with one mini-series or scripted series per quarter.

It marks a bright spot for the television movie business, which was once a mainstay of network and cable television but has been seen as the less sexy end of the spectrum in recent years.

Development of these projects will be overseen by former A+E Networks exec Meghan Hooper White, who joined earlier this year as EVP and Head of Original Movies and Limited Series.

Scripted originals that have been cancelled or moved at Paramount Network this year include 68 Whiskey, which was cancelled after one season, Sexy Beast, which was originally given a straight-to-series order before being axed earlier this summer and Darren Star’s Emily in Paris, which was originally ordered at Paramount Network before moving to Netflix.

Yellowstone, the Paramount Network’s hit western starring Kevin Costner, was renewed for a fourth season earlier this year.

Discovery Aims To Launch Discovery+ Streaming Service In Early 2021

Discovery plans to debut its direct-to-consumer streaming service — which will be called Discovery+ — in the first quarter of 2021, according to agency executives. Some agency executives had been told that the TV network group was aiming to launch the standalone streamer in the fourth quarter of 2020, but were skeptical of the timeframe given a lack of details about the service’s pricing, sponsorship packages and distribution plans. A Discovery spokesperson declined to comment.

Discovery CEO David Zaslav has teased the upcoming streaming service during the company’s earnings calls and at industry conferences, but the company has been light on details. Speaking at a virtual event hosted by Goldman Sachs on Sept. 17, he said the streamer will be coming to market “very soon.” Discovery has yet to officially announce the streamer’s name, but The Information had previously reported its name as Discovery+. Discovery filed a trademark for Discovery+ on July 10, according to a copy of the filing.

Discovery+ will feature an ad-supported and an ad-free tier, and the ad-supported tier will carry a maximum of five minutes of ads per hour of programming, according to the agency executives. Discovery has not shared with the agency executives how much money it will charge for people to subscribe to the service.

Discovery is seeking a limited number of advertisers to sign on as launch sponsors in time for its start, according to the agency executives, who were unaware how many sponsors the company is looking to secure. One agency executive likened Discovery’s initial ad sales strategy as “another Peacock,” referring to NBCUniversal’s move to secure 10 launch sponsors for Peacock’s debut. That contrasts with WarnerMedia’s strategy to attract a broader array of advertisers for HBO Max’s ad-supported tier, which is slated to come online next spring. Discovery has not formally presented advertisers with sponsorship packages, including details of how much those packages will cost or what they will entail beyond Discovery offering to guarantee ad impression counts and to arrange co-marketing deals for the advertisers to help to promote the service.

“It’s appealing, but we still have to see what it’s going to be,” said a second agency executive of the Discovery+ pitch.

Discovery is aiming the service at people who are less likely to tune in to Discovery’s linear networks, said the agency executives. Discovery already operates separate streaming apps that require people to log in with their pay-TV subscriptions to stream its TV networks’ shows. “This is for cord cutters,” said a third agency executive.

To attract cord cutters who are likely younger than Discovery’s linear audience, Discovery has been in the market for original programming, including reality shows and documentary series, for Discovery+ that appeal to younger adult audiences — twenty- and thirty-something viewers — and that star mainstream celebrities, according to entertainment industry executives.

Discovery has posted job listings on LinkedIn for positions overseeing the DTC service’s original programming. Those postings include an svp of original series as well as vps overseeing “lifestyle” programming (an industry term synonymous with reality TV series, like food, true crime and fashion shows), “factual” programming (an umbrella term for documentary series focused on science, animals, technology, etc.) and documentaries and specials.

Given Discovery’s ownership of networks including Discovery, TLC and Food Network, Discovery+ could vie to be the streaming network of choice for audiences interested in home, cooking and lifestyle-related programming as well as science-related documentaries.

The service will be niche compared to general-interest entertainment services like Netflix, HBO Max or Peacock. That could be to Discovery’s advantage, positioning it as a complement to other streamers that people may subscribe to. Such positioning has worked for Disney’s Disney+, appeals primarily to families and has attracted 60.5 million subscribers since launching in November 2019, and appears to be what Discovery has in mind for Discovery+.

“If you have Netflix, if you have Disney+, if you have Amazon, if you have any video product, who wouldn’t want what we have? It’s what most women in America are watching all the time,” Zaslav said when discussing Discovery’s streaming plans during Discovery’s earnings call on Aug. 5.

Discovery has made a point of owning the shows that air on its networks. That should give Discovery+ a large built-in library for viewers to find programming to watch rather than relying solely on original shows to attract audiences.

However, it’s unclear how much of the programming currently airing on Discovery’s linear networks will be available on Discovery+ because distributing those shows on the service could violate Discovery’s distribution deals with pay-TV providers. In addition to the original shows and programming that had previously aired on TV, Discovery appears intent on augmenting Discovery+’s library by acquiring programming from outside companies, according to a Discovery job posting on LinkedIn.

“We’re going to be coming with a fresh library of content, a huge amount of fresh originals, at a time when the road has been paved by Netflix and Disney and HBO and people are getting more and more acclimated to viewing content on devices,” Zaslav said during the Goldman Sachs event.

However, on which devices will Discovery+ be available remains a big question. Discovery has not detailed its distribution plans to agency executives, who are keen to hear whether the streamer will be available on Amazon’s and Roku’s connected TV platforms at launch.

A year ago Discovery+’s availability on two of the top CTV platforms may not have been a question, but this year both Amazon and Roku have shown themselves taking a harder line when negotiating distribution with TV network groups by asking to have a hand in the streamers’ subscription sales and to sell a share of the streamers’ ad inventory. WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal have yet to strike deals with Amazon to distribute HBO Max and Peacock, respectively, and NBCUniversal only reached a deal with Roku on Sept. 18 while WarnerMedia remains deadlocked with the CTV platform.

Discovery could run into a similar stalemate with Amazon and Roku and, as a smaller company than WarnerMedia or NBCUniversal, may not have as much leverage in negotiations or willingness to withhold its service from the CTV platforms as it attempts to scale.

During the Goldman Sachs session, Zaslav seemed to imply that Discovery still had some work to do in rounding out the distribution mix for Discovery+, though he did not get into specifics. “Our only challenge right now is we’re not on every device. We will be very soon, and we will be in a way that’s aggressive,” Zaslav said.

Remember even Disney had a similar situation and not long ago it was announced that Discovery will be streamlining their entertainment offering.

The SIC Channels Reportedly Being The Next Channels To Get Pulled Off From DStv In Angola And More Likely The Rest Of Africa

$

"DStv informs that SIC International Africa and SIC News will leave our platform from October 15th", reads the message sent to all customers by the South African company MultiChoice's satellite television service. Contacted by Lusa, SIC's official source, confirmed the information, by email, but without further details. Another source from Carnaxide said only that the withdrawal was due to "contractual issues", excluding editorial reasons.

In MultiChoice's press release, to which Lusa had access, the operator says that the cancellation of SIC Internacional and SIC Notícias, as of October 15, is part of their "ongoing efforts to update" the content grid and "optimize the set of channels available. MultiChoice justifies the decision with a "greater focus on investment and local content offering" and ensures that it "will not give up" on "offering the best content available" to its customers.

"As a business born and raised in Africa, we have made significant investments in the development of original African programming to deliver the best African content on the continent," stresses the South African company, which operates in sub-Saharan Africa through the DStv platform.

MultiChoice said it will create "a platform to share Angolan stories," while recognizing that investment in local content faces constraints such as "market size" and "ability to fund these initiatives. SIC channels had previously been suspended by DStv on June 5, 2017, but at the time the company did not explain the decision, regretting only the "inconvenience caused".

At that time, DStv joined the decision taken earlier by satellite television operator Zap, of businesswoman Isabel dos Santos, who, on March 14, 2017, had interrupted the broadcasting of SIC Internacional and SIC Notícias channels in the Angolan and Mozambican markets, after the Portuguese channel had released critical reports of the regime of former President José Eduardo dos Santos.

At the time, the decision was justified by the costs of acquiring the rights of the two Portuguese channels.

In September 2018, after more than a year without broadcasting in Angola, the Carnaxide station announced its return to DStv.

SIC K, SIC Mulher, SIC Caras and SIC Radical are still available on the Zap grid, and have never been suspended.

The good news is that some of their programs are moving over to MYTV which is obviously also on the StarSat decoder.

No details where provided on the sudden removal perhaps it was another cost cutting decision especially during these tough times with the pandemic out and about.

Starsat and StarTimes (ROA) will also be losing FOX Life from October luckily the channel's supplier Televisa already provides a channel through their platform and FOX will be rolling out The Candidate later in November which is another Televisa production.

Netflix And DStv Are The Monopoly Of Africa

$

0

MultiChoice's DStv and Netflix have been the top players in cable and streaming respectively for over a decade. Before they were like cats and dogs now they've seemingly become besties so here's how the pair are similar.

MultiChoice's DStv has provided funding for several channels like Moja Love and Newsroom Afrika while Netflix has provided funding for several businesses like DreamWorks Animation (which spawned the DreamWorks Channel) so if there such case where these platforms shut down these brands would likely shutdown or downsize if possible.

Dependency - Through a briefing with ICASA, Cape Town TV revealed that they're reliant on DStv in order alongside several other channels like the SABC while Nickelodeon, Disney and NBCUniversal provided distributed several old and exclusive programming through Netflix.

Quantity - Netflix provided over a hundred new content a year while DStv provided over 120 TV channels. Quality - they're both not perfect, Netflix is mass producing making it hard to actually find something worth watching while DStv provides 1000 hours of new content in 12 years when Netflix can actually do that in 4 months.

Superiority - DStv has the sports, local dramas and news to keep viewers onboard while Netflix has their large catalogue and doesn't have much knowledge of the African heritage to back them meaning bigger is better.

Competition - DStv's only competitor charges almost half of Compact subscription (Starsat), what turns people off about their rival is the lack of premium entertainment and sports. Netflix has Amazon Prime which is barely hyped about in Africa and least talked about it.

Costs - DStv and Netflix monitor the subscription based on the programming and the economy. If Netflix doesn't hike their subscription yearly it's only due to the fact that they supply content not channels.

Repeats: You can repeatedly stream the same season of Umbrella Academy on Netflix and still get charged for all those times you were binging the show (that answers your question on DStv).

CONCLUSION: Netflix and DStv are overrated it's up to you on which platform you invest your money onto. My advice don't invest in Netflix only because they offer a lot of content unless you plan to follow those shows and don't invest your money onto DStv if you'll only watch 1 channel.

Naagin Returns For A Second Season On eExtra

Colors TV's Naagin returns for a second season on its new home, eExtra. The show also aired on eBella before it got discontinued and reruns surfaced on eExtra for the time being.

It took eMedia Investments 2 years to bring the second season of Naagin and Qubool Hai but what's important is that they've both got release dates. eExtra is currently available on OpenView, DStv and Starsat while eBella wasn't available on Starsat which would have caused quite a riot if these shows didn't get reruns to get them up-to-date.

In the second season of Naagin which takes place three months after the first season, Shivanya delivers her daughter, Shivangi (Mouni Roy, also played her mom) in the third month of her pregnancy which shocks the doctors. Yamini (Sudha Chandran) gets resurrected and they'll also be a 24 year leap revolving around Shivangi. She'll be seeking justice for her mother's death.

Since the second season debut in , Naagin managed to walk away with 4 awards including Best Actress, Face of the Year and BIG Zee Most Entertaining TV Show (Fiction) and Actor.

The series airs Thursday 15 October at 15:30 on eExtra

The channel is available on OpenView channel 105, DStv channel 195 and Starsat channel 489.

Limpopo TV Might Launch On OpenView Really Soon, No News On Whether DStv Or Starsat Will Be Adding It Soon

Limpopo's first ever TV channel launched in the beginning of October offering quality programming from shows that are created, delivered and produced by talent from the province.

There's been a lot of hype about the channel's presence on DStv, Starsat and OpenView in the beginning of the year through other people and the channel themselves. Even viewers with Starsat where able to view the channel without changing settings before the channel disappeared.

After the launch of Limpopo TV you could only access if you unlock the public channels on your decoder. The channel's media handler did mention that they are in negotiations with several service providers.

So far it looks like OpenView is one of the confirmed service providers. The channel founder mentioned that:
We are at the Final Stages of our Negotiations with the Provider and we will wait for them to Release the News first then we will also Share.

The channel might pop up on Starsat and DStv but viewers will likely get it later as both providers are still rolling out more channels in the coming months maybe they'll be able to squeeze this one in as an added bonus like they were suppose to do with the long awaited channel, SABC Education.

Update: Mindset Pop On DStv And DBE Learning On OpenView

$

Earlier in the year, Covid19 hit South African shores forcing schools and businesses to shut down. During that time, service providers were trying to source out content that was educating and entertaining to viewers.

MultiChoice and Mindset teamed up to launch a spinoff pop-up channel catered to Grade 4-9 with a mix of Grade 1-3 called Mindset Pop (also known as Mindset's Pop Primary) in South Africa and the rest of Africa on channel 317.

eMedia Investments teamed up with the Department of Education to launch DBE Learning which caters Grade 10-12 with additional subjects to help out the current Mindset channel. It is currently occupies channel 122.

Both channels were available from 1st April. Through media outlets, DBE Learning as stated would be available until the end of September while Mindset Pop would be available until 10 December according to MultiChoice Africa earlier in the year.

Now DBE Learning is still running on the OpenView despite reaching its cutoff date so it's possible that there are no plans to do away with the channel. It first launched as a channel for Grade 10-12 now they added material for Grade 1-3 meaning it's no different to Mindset.

Mindset Pop has been dominating the DStv platform and is highly recommended through schools and educational forums across Africa. Several outlets still list it as a pop-up channel but no cutoff date was actually confirmed for South Africa (only ROA) and through an enquiry their customer care listed it as a permanent channel for customers and this very likely includes the rest of Africa.

Schools are now reopened under several conditions and children in most schools get time off meaning they won't able to wrapup their academics but with these channels put in place they'll help them catch-up.

MultiChoice CEO On Content And Channel Collection

$

Aletta Alberts: It's not the one or the other, it's more a hybrid. There will always be linear channels because there is content that people want to see live, and things that we see that people still prefer to watch on a linear channel more so than on-demand.

People show much more tolerance for shorter, "event-like" series on-demand because the experience is like binge-watching, compared to say sitting through a 22-episode anything, unless you're very committed or you watch it in intervals.

Yes, the world has changed but the channels is still very, very strong and on a daily basis, we still get pitched hundreds of new TV channels every week. But the world is shifting in the sense that there are other genres coming to the foreground.

Also, as the base of viewers grows, the mix of the base is changing, so you are looking for different content. So we know that the top-end for instance in South Africa where it's not a homogenous market here and they've got a lot of access to Wifi, they're more moving towards streaming services and over-the-top services and watching content that is maybe slightly more discerning or niche genres that are more about personal taste than watching things in groups.

Then when you get to the middle market and lower, those viewers still want to see content that they can watch together and they also don't have hours and hours and gigabytes of data to view with.

Having said that, there are still genres that people want to watch live. People want to watch reality TV live because if they don't watch it live, they can't take part in the social conversation. You don't, for instance, want to watch MasterChef on OTT or something like Our Perfect Wedding or My Kitchen Rules or those types of shows because everybody wants to comment on the dress or what people are doing wrong. People do still want to watch that live because of social media. I think the reason why we are taking channels off-we're taking content off that we believe can go sit on OTT because audiences are so small now on those channels that it doesn't warrant it to have actual linear channels anymore; and only look at those channels that are really mass-market channels over time, as the base keeps on changing.

In Africa, the channels business is still very, very, very big and will be for the foreseeable future. I don't think that's something that's going to change overnight.
